We’re open for our 18th season. The Memorial Day weather was mixed: A beautiful Saturday (when we could have breakfast on the terrace — see above), a chilly Sunday, and a rainy (and then sunny) Monday. But the trees are in leaf, the gardens are well ahead of their usual schedule because of the mild winter, Five Islands Lobster Company is open every day, and we’re looking forward to another banner year. We’re thrilled again by yet another kudo from TripAdvisor — our fourth season in which we have been awarded their “Certificate of Excellence,” based on the nearly 100% 5-star reviews given by our guests.
One of our favorite spring breakfast dishes is “Maine Spring Hash.” It sounds pretty basic, but it’s a fabulous combination of new potatoes, asparagus, fiddleheads, and lobster — topped by a poached or fried egg. Here’s the hash, just before the addition of the egg:
Our spring calendar has lots of openings midweek. Take advantage of Maine in the quiet month of June. You can check our calendar and book rooms on our website.
Solo Bistro. A Guest Favorite!

For any new bookings in May that include at least three nights at Coveside, we will provide — at no additional charge beyond our low-season room rates — some great additional benefits

Children’s Garden at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
attractions, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath or the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in nearby Boothbay. The Maritime Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into Maine’s shipbuilding and seafaring past and present. Admission includes a reduced cost for their popular boat trips on the Kennebec. The Botanical Gardens are the largest in the Northeast and have become Maine’s second most popular tourist destination (after Acadia National Park) and a spectacular addition to our area.
- *two decadent lobster rolls at the ever-popular Five Islands Lobster Company, a five-minute walk from Coveside and always on lists of Maine’s best lobster wharfs. The view, and the lobster, are the best!
Five Island Lobster Co.

Moonrise Five Islands. Tom McCandless, photographer
We had dinner at the Five Islands wharf the other night, to celebrate the rising of the full moon and the gorgeous weather. It was captured beautifully by our good friend and photographer, Tom McCandless. One of my all-time favorite images is Ansel Adams’ “Moonrise Hernandez.” Tom’s picture is almost as beautiful.
